Dean Gerstein, PhD
Biography

Dean is the Director of Sponsored Research at Pomona College since 2018. His previous positions include:
- Director of research, research professor of behavioral and organizational sciences
- IRB director and alternate chair, and vice provost at Claremont Graduate University
- Senior vice president, founding director of the Washington (DC) office, lead strategic planner, and chair of the department of substance abuse, mental health, and criminal justice studies at NORC at the University of Chicago
- Senior study director at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
- Research and faculty positions in sociology and psychiatry at UC San Diego
- and a Postdoctoral fellowship in mental health program evaluation at UCLA
Dean has received more than $60 million in research grants and contracts from numerous federal agencies (NIH, NSF, NIJ, SAMHSA, others), state and international organizations, and private philanthropies. He is currently a PI, co-PI and consultant, respectively, on three NSF grants. He has authored 125 publications across the biobehavioral and social sciences, including Addiction, American Journal of Public Health, Annual Review of Sociology, Journal of Quantitative Criminology, and New England Journal of Medicine. He has a BA from Reed College and a PhD in sociology from Harvard University.
Dean is especially interested in new and midcareer faculty development, data systems and analytics, research support at minority-serving and emerging research institutions, solicitation and review decryption, survey design, and preventing and resolving complicated problems including sponsor and collaborator relations through clear and creative thinking plus hard work.
